5 Plant Based Laundry Detergents That You Need To Check Out

by Harriet Fairbairn

Living a plant based lifestyle doesn’t have to just be eating a plant based diet. You can also start to live cleaner and more eco friendly in the home.

I have been thinking about various ways you can do that and decided a good place to start was with plant based laundry detergent.

It would be nice to find a product that was safer for the planet, kinder on the skin and without the nasty chemicals.

I have been researching a few different products that I have found online. I find when using different products it’s all trial and error and by trying things out you’ll find a product that’s right for you.

So after a good look around I’ve got some plant based detergents for you to check out.

I’ve personally used the first in the list but the others seem like great options from my research.

So here’s that list for you.

5 Plant Based Laundry Detergents

1. Soap Nuts/ Berries

Soap nuts come from the Sapindus Mukorossi tree, the nuts are shells from the soapberry nut.

The shells of the nut contain a natural soap called saponin.

When put into the washing machine the nutshells absorb the water, the saponin is released which makes the water soapy and cleans your clothes.

You can buy the soapberries online and they usually come in big packs that come with a little cloth bag.

For a hot wash, you pop 2 soap nuts into the bag and for a cold wash, you use 3-4 nuts.

You then put them into the washing machine and start it as usual.

The soap nuts soften the clothes also so there is no need for fabric softener.

Once the load is done you can take the nuts out of the bag and leave them out to dry and use them again!

You can reuse them for up to 6 times.

There are a lot of mixed opinions on soap nuts but I have used them and I personally love them.

I have a household that suffers from sensitive skin so these are perfect as they are natural and kind to your skin.

I quite like that there’s no overpowering flowery odor to them however if you miss a scent to your clothes you can pop a couple of drops of essential oil in the draw and it will give that subtle added scent.

Lavender is my favorite!

I’d suggest making sure you have a good cloth bag to wash them in with a zip or drawstring otherwise they will come loose and won’t work as well.

2. Sapadilla Liquid Laundry Detergent

Sapadadilla is a biodegradable liquid laundry detergent that has no harsh chemicals.

It is packed with plant based ingredients and is known for its fresh smelling, amazing scent.

They have no fake fragrances or color and the scents are made from natural essential oils.

The scents are:

  • Grapefruit and bergamot
  • Sweet lavender and lime
  • Rosemary and peppermint

You can tell just by reading those scents that they’re going to smell natural and fresh.

The detergent is vegan and friendly to the planet so there’s no need to feel guilty when using it.

People had also said that they only need to use a little bit and they get a great result which means it lasts a lot longer which helps save some money.

Win-Win!

3. Bean And Lily

What I love about this product is the packaging is clean and clear and simple.

Which is exactly what you’re looking for with a product that’s natural and isn’t packed with lots of harsh irritating chemicals.

Bean and Lily is a plant based laundry soap that is made so it is safe to use with children and pets.

It is non toxic, has no offensive overpowering smells and is PH neutral which means its kind to your skin.

Their mantra is ‘ Do the job, Do no harm’

They promise that you’ll never find solvents, harmful chemicals or harmful compounds in their products.

People have used it to wash their pet’s bedding and toys and have said that their pet hasn’t been as itchy or irritable as it would other detergents.

It’s also capable of getting out stains, unlike some other plant based products.

4. Grab Green Stoneworks Laundry Detergent Pods

This product comes with 50 pre-measured pods (which is helpful because if you’re anything like me I always end up using more than I should!)

They’re made with natural ingredients that are non toxic and free from chlorine, dyes, and optical brighteners.

They gently clean your clothes whilst softening so no need for any extra softeners.

Because of the natural ingredients, it is a perfect product for sensitive skin.

Also, it has great packaging.

You can get a pack of 50 pods that come in a brown paper bag, it isn’t currently recyclable as it has a plastic lining to stop the pods sticking together but it uses a lot less plastic than the big boxes of laundry pods.

5. Puracy Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent

A pure laundry detergent created by doctors for sensitive skin and people with allergies.

It has no sulfates, bleach or toxic chemicals, can be used on light and dark clothing, diapers and pet bedding.

It comes in a pump bottle that means its cleaner, no messy measuring, and simple to use. The bottle can also do 96 washes which is amazing!

It’s also recyclable!

A lot of people have also said how great it is on stains!

I like the look of this detergent, it looks clean and I’d like to give it a go myself.

Check it out directly on their website here.

As I’ve said before it’s all about testing which works best for you.

I think if you’ve got a family with allergies and sensitive skin it’s best to use a detergent that’s overall plant based and natural as you don’t have the added chemicals and overpowering smells that irritate the skin.

Who doesn’t want lovely naturally fresh smelling clothes along with saving the planet?

Hopefully, you will find a product that suits you out of this list which will make you happier and save some pennies!

Happy washing!
